Promotion of USAIDs Women’s Legal Protection Project

On 31st of March in Skopje a press conference was held for promotion of the USAID Women’s Legal Protection Project. The general goal of the project is provision of adequate legal protection to women victims of gender based violence and discrimination: domestic violence, trafficking with women, sexual violence and sexual workers. The USAIDs Women’s Legal Protection Project is a three year initiative implemented by Association for Emancipation, Solidarity and Equality of women (ESE) in partnership with Open Gate – La Strada and the Coalition for Sexual and Health Rights of Marginalized Communities. The project is in line with international human rights standards; strengthen the judicial procedures for dealing with cases involving such violations, and to raise public awareness of the devastating effects of abuse.

“We are all agents of change, whether we work locally in the community or as part of a large government agency.  Through joint efforts we can raise awareness, change attitudes, and protect victims against all abuse -- physical, emotional, psychological, or financial,” said Michael Stievater, USAID General Development Office Director.

The project will: monitor court cases and hearings; assess the level of court protection provided to vulnerable categories of female victims of violence; strengthen the ability of judges to apply international human rights standards of protection as stipulated in the United Nations’ Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW); increase the level of information available to victims about the court system and its procedures; prepare recommendations for the amendment and advancement of existing laws in accordance with the specific needs of each vulnerable group; enhance the ability of civil society organizations to use international and regional mechanisms to protect women’s rights (alternative protocols to CEDAW and the European Court on Human Rights); initiate individual cases for strategic litigation; and provide free legal aid and assistance to  women victims of violence and gender-based discrimination.
